Nikolas Margaritis

Underwater Filmmaker & Photographer

Nikolas Margaritis, also known as “MIZU”, combines his experience as a clinical operations manager with his passion for underwater exploration and photography. With a keen eye for detail and a commitment to environmental conservation, he is actively involved in underwater cinematography and photography.

His involvement in diving began in 2011 when he discovered the beauty of the underwater world. Since then, through specialized training in technical diving (TEC) and cave diving (CAVE), Nikolas has explored marine life, historical shipwrecks, and caves while cultivating his artistic expression.

As a founding member of the Inner Space Explorers Greece team, in 2014, he organized the first Ghostfishing missions in Greece, with the first objective of removing nets from the “Pylaros” shipwreck near Alimos, under the auspices of the international organizations Healthy Seas and Ghost Fishing.

Nikolas is a founding member of the Top2Bottom Diving Team, a team of divers specializing in delivering high-quality audiovisual material in the underwater environment, documenting the shipwrecks of the Greek seas and our wider geographical area. Within the framework of these activities, Nikolas filmed the underwater cave expeditions to the Amfitriti Cave in 2016 and 2017. His contribution to highlighting the underwater wealth of Greece was internationally recognized when he was invited to the international Tek Dive Europe 2017 conference in Belgium, where the first public screening of the documentary “AMPHITRITE” took place.

In September 2020, he participated as an underwater cinematographer in filming for National Geographic’s “Europe from Above” in Lefkada, taking part in the action of the environmental organization Aegean Rebreath.

His dedication to underwater cinematography was sealed in June 2024 when he was honored with the “Best Underwater Cinematography” award at the European Cinematography Awards for the film 4Caves – 4Seasons “Journey into the Veins of the Earth”, produced by Top2Bottom Diving Team.

Nikolas continues his active underwater filming, prioritizing the systematic documentation of our underwater cultural heritage and the promotion of Greece’s geological history.

In 2023, he completed the first level of speleology from S.E.L.A.S., and since then, he has participated in many missions with the association, expanding his knowledge in underground explorations.

Seeking ways to contribute to the preservation of the marine environment, Nikolas pursues collaborations with non-profit organizations, contributing his knowledge and experience to initiatives related to environmental management and the promotion of underwater cultural heritage, emphasizing the importance of the historical shipwrecks of the Greek seas.
